Kanwariyas created a massive ruckus on the Saharanpur-Dehradun highway in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, after their sacred kanwar was allegedly damaged in an accident. The incident, which took place three days after a similar act of vandalism in Muzaffarnagar, saw the Kanwariyas brutally assaulting a bike rider and destroying his motorcycle. The police intervened to pacify the situation, but the video of the violent episode has since gone viral. A similar case was also reported in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, where Kanwariyas broke an auto-rickshaw over similar allegations.
The Kanwar Yatra, a holy expedition, began on July 22, 2024, and will continue until August 2, 2024. During this period, participants, known as Kanwariyas, carry sacred water from the Ganga to offer to Lord Shiva. In light of the yatra, the Uttar Pradesh police announced traffic restrictions, including the closure of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway to heavy vehicles starting from July 22 and extending restrictions to all vehicles from July 29 to August 5.
